Marketing is the main anchor to keep any business successful. As the internet world is growing, the number of hands that grab the internet also reached its peak. The number of people who come online is almost equal to 80%, and it almost becomes constant, as per the report of Mailchimp. 

Here, I provided a rundown about what is digital marketing all about. But before diving deep, let’s know what digital marketing is all about.

What is digital marketing?

What does marketing mean? It is the way of selling a product to the end-user by advertising it. In the same, digital marketing is all about selling services online by utilizing the power of social media, SEO, E-mail, and apps.

So, digital marketing is online, right? No, digital marketing involves both the offline and online world. In fact, to take a business on a road to success, both strategies are vital.

Why does digital marketing matter more than other marketing techniques?

The marketing strategies which worked traditionally are no longer effective. Even though several marketing techniques are playing well, digital marketing plays great.

Let me explain with a quick example,

Have you ever come across the traditional banner advertisement placed on roadsides when you walk through? Absolutely yes!!

In traditional days, it worked well, as people would look on the roadside more rather than looking at a mini device in their hands.

But the scenario is different now! If you are traveling somewhere by car or train, where do you look? Most people will definitely look at their smartphones, right?

It means, most of us don’t see any roadside banner advertisements anymore. But we start seeing other sponsored ads on social media. Well, this is one of the methods used in digital marketing. This is how digital marketing plays a great marketing strategy.

Types of digital marketing

Digital marketing has several factors. Yet, the most crucial and vast categories of digital marketing include,

  • Search engine optimization (SEO)
  • Content marketing
  • Social media marketing
  • Pay per click (PPC)
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Email marketing

Though these are vast topics to talk about, let me give a simple introduction to each of the digital marketing strategies.

Search engine optimization (SEO)

What is Digital marketing about?

This is the way of marketing your products or services without spending more or even for free. It is optimizing your service or product information favorable to search engines like Google. If your optimization is perfect, you are the one who is going to appear as the first result on the Google search results.

Wait, it is not as simple as it sounds! It has furthermore categories like on page SEO, off page SEO, and technical SEO.

On page SEO:

As the name indicates, it is all about the content that exists on your product or service page. It starts from finding the right keywords and optimization of 12 different on page factors. I will talk about this in a separate blog post.

Once you are done with the on page SEO part, you are ready to take off to the page SEO level.

Off page SEO:

Let’s say you have passed 12 optimization factors with perfect image and content. You may ask, will my content rank first?

Sorry to break this, actually NO. You have to do some work outside your website to boost your rankings in Google search results.

Say, for example, you and your friend have great content with perfect on page SEO. Now, a third big website like Times of India refers to your friend’s website as, “This website has the source for A”. What will happen?

Most traffic goes to your friend’s website, right? These are known as Backlinks. If the number of backlinks increases, ranking and traffic will automatically increase.

That’s all? No, my friend, it has to be drilled deep!!!

Technical SEO

This factor is all about making your website or webpage friendly to search engine crawls. This too has factors like page speed, image alternative texts and much more.

Content marketing

It is the process of creating content and marketing them on various platforms. This will increase sales, brand awareness, traffic, or lead generation.

Blogging

Blogging is an evergreen strategy to market your content. By providing valuable information to your visitors, you can potentially convert the traffic to leads. Amazing right?

Ebooks

It is all about providing valuable information to the visitors in exchange for their information like email addresses. By doing this, you can generate a mail list that can be converted to leads for your sales.

Infographics

What if I write like, 20% of users prefer coffee and 80% of users prefer only green tea. It is informative, but if I prove it like a graph it will be more convenient for the users right?

This is how infographics play a huge role in content marketing.

Social media marketing

As it sounds, it is the form of marketing through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and much more. Social media takes most of the eyeballs with it. Agree?

Yes, most of us use social media for almost everything. Have you ever hidden under a blanket and scrolled through social media feeds? Yes, I did it too!

What does it mean? Social media ads are more effective round the clock. It also became a huge marketplace to drive sales to several businesses.

Managing one or two social media is completely fine. But for a business, it has to be present everywhere to make people aware of their brands. But how do they maintain everything? Well, several tools are available for them. In upcoming posts, I will give you all about social media marketing.

Pay per click

This is a process where a publisher will publish your ads on a platform where you have to pay them for every time your ad gets clicked. The most widely used PPC type is Google ads, where you can place ads on Google search results.

Only Google? No, you can also use many other platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn. Among these, Facebook ads are most preferred for running ads.

Affiliate marketing

This is one of my favorite parts. You can earn a lot by referring to products from platforms like Amazon, Flipkart, Snapdeal, and other similar platforms.

What you have to do is to create content that describes the product, be it a review or just a description. If any visitor to your website clicks on your link and purchases a product, you will receive a decent commission.

Email marketing

Email marketing is still a powerful tool to drive traffic to your website or to convert your leads to sales. There is a huge science behind how effectively you can send emails to your subscribers to make them visit or buy from you for a long time.

Types of emails that you can send are,

  • Promotional mail
  • Newsletters
  • Follow-up emails to download something
  • Tips to improve engagement

What does a digital marketer do?

As a first step, a marketer has to understand the problems faced by the customers and find a solution to solve the problem that they are facing.

Let’s take an example,

There is a nutritionist in your locality, they have really amazing products for sales. But they have no idea about selling them to people who are out of your locality.

So, the pain point of your customer is to find people for sales. You should master the strategies which I mentioned above to drive people to the nutritionist products.

Here are the three stages where the people should be narrowed down for sales to happen,

  1. Awareness stage: People will become familiar with the brand by seeing ads on various platforms.
  2. Consideration stage: People will come one step closer to the brand. They start researching about the products you have or download an ebook about the product information.
  3. Decision stage: Here, people will be converted. For this, you have to build trust by showing results, reviews, or testimonials of the previous customers.

This is how a product is being sold to the consumer. As a digital marketer, you should know a lot to win people’s minds and trust to make a brand consistent.
